Rafael Espiridion Guarneros
"The original chili roaster," was born in Mexico in 1892 and fought in the Mexican Revolution. Fighting against Poncho Villa and his army, Rafael and his fellow soldiers were captured and forced to fight in the front lines for Poncho Villa as he had told them they were to now fight for him, or be shot in the back. Poncho Villa learned that Rafael was also a cook and had a reputation for roasting the finest chili peppers in Mexico. He ordered Rafael to make a batch for him and soon became his personal chef. It is rumored that Poncho Villa enjoyed Rafael's peppers so much that he served them when entertaining other generals and important visitors. He loved Rafael's roasted green chili peppers so much that he chased Rafael all over the Southwest after Rafael escaped and took his chili roaster with him.

While history is not clear why Poncho Villa went from honored general in the Mexican army to a bandit that raided towns and villages in the Southwestern states of America, we can tell you that Rafael escaped dressed as a Chinaman and spent years moving about in this region until Poncho Villa's death. After that, he settled down in Tucson Arizona and worked as a chef at the Santa Rita Hotel where he met his wife and handed down his chili roasting secrets to the next generations of Guarneros. Our family is proud of Rafael and in the name we have given the roaster we have built in his memory - The Chili man chili roaster |
